This week (1-7 September) marks Zero Waste Week, a globally embraced, UK‑founded campaign dedicated to reducing landfill waste and sparking sustainable living. Since its launch in 2008 by Rachelle Strauss, the campaign has offered creative, community-led challenges like fitting your week’s trash into a jam jar”, reminding us that our daily habits ripple outward across the planet.
In this spirit of collective action, the F6S Greentech Synergy stands as a powerful response. A collaborative initiative under F6S and encompassing 24 EU-funded projects 20 EU‑funded projects, it’s aligned with the goals of the EU Green Deal, driving climate resilience, circularity, and sustainable innovation across Europe. This synergy amplifies impact and accelerates green transformation.
Greentech Projects
Here’s a snapshot of the Greentech coalition and how its projects are driving circular economy, sustainability, and climate-smart solutions across industries, regions, and communities:
Circular Textiles & Furniture
- STREP – Revolutionises textile circularity through automation, AI-driven sorting, and enzymatic recycling, enabling full fibre recovery for sustainable fashion and industry.
- CIRPASS-2 – Develops Digital Product Passports (DPPs) for textiles, electronics, tyres, and construction, enabling traceability and closed-loop resource use
- Cir4Fun – Accelerates the circular economy in the furniture sector by promoting DPPs for transparency and traceability.
- FITT-NESS – Supports SMEs in the furniture sector by helping them design interregional investment portfolios and innovation strategies.
Rural Development & Communities
- RURACTIVE – Fosters a just, inclusive, and sustainable transition in rural areas via community-led innovation ecosystems.
- SESA – Provides replicable energy access technologies and business models in Africa, creating local economic opportunities.
- SUSRUR – Helps tourism SMEs in rural and remote areas of Europe develop sustainable business solutions via open calls.
- Paluwise – Demonstrates sustainable paludiculture practices on rewetted peatlands across Europe.
Climate, Health & Resilience
- CLIMOS – Combines research, health institutions, and communities to prepare for environmental health risks linked to climate change.
- PLANET4HEALTH – Tackles environmental degradation and its health impacts, creating policy tools and raising public awareness.
- REGILIENCE – Supports cities and regions in building climate-resilient pathways with a demand-driven approach.
Industry, Manufacturing & Robotics
- SoTecIn Factory – Accelerates circular and sustainable innovation in industry by supporting entrepreneurs and SMEs.
- SITOLUB – Builds an AI-driven platform to predict lubricant performance and enable safer, more sustainable industrial processes.
- CIRCULOOS – Advances systemic circularity in industrial supply chains and material recovery.
- ROB4GREEN – Leverages AI robotics to make industrial processes safer, smarter, and more efficient.
- SNUG – Develops sustainable construction methods with innovative thermal insulation for reduced building impact.
- SEE BRIDGE – Supports social economy SMEs in energy-intensive sectors to scale up their green efforts.
Energy & Batteries
- STREAMS – Strengthens Europe’s battery materials supply chain, reducing import dependency and boosting resilience.
- HyLiST – Develops hybrid lithium battery systems with higher efficiency and sustainability.
- CleanHyPro – Creates an Open Innovation Test Bed for sustainable electrolysis materials and components.
- HEDGE-IoT – Builds a digital framework to deploy IoT assets in energy systems, integrating intelligence at edge and cloud levels.
Food & Agriculture
- AgRimate – Uses AI, AR, and robotics to revolutionise pruning practices, reduce labour strain, and close skills gaps.
- EcoScape – Links agriculture and biodiversity through education and training programmes for researchers and students.
- NOSTRADAMUS – Aligns with Farm to Fork and the CAP by promoting data-driven, sustainable agriculture.
- Inno4CFIS – Promotes carbon farming and nature-based business models to increase CO₂ uptake and biodiversity.
- FOODITY – Builds digital solutions for food and nutrition while ensuring citizens’ data sovereignty.
- ZeroWaste (ZeroW) – Demonstrates innovations to prevent and reduce food waste across supply chains.
Education, Skills & Digital
- GREENVERSITY – Integrates the European Green Competence Framework (GreenComp) into higher education programmes.
- 5G-DiGiTs Builds a pan-European alliance for education, training, and innovation in 5G technologies.
Materials & Advanced Technologies
- NICKEFFECT – Develops nickel-based coating materials to replace scarce platinum in energy and digital storage applications.
Why does it matter more than ever?
According to the concept of a circular economy, shifting from the traditional “take‑make‑dispose” model to one that designs out waste, keeps materials in use, and regenerates ecosystems can reduce up to 39% of global emissions, especially in sectors like plastics, food, steel, and construction.
Zero Waste Week reminds us of the urgency and promise of redesigning systems, and the Greentech Synergy exemplifies how collective innovation can deliver on that potential in Europe.
What we can do this week
- Join the movement: Commit to one zero-waste action-repair, recycle, compost, or reuse, and inspire others.
- Amplify the message: Share your journey using #ZeroWasteWeek and mention how Greentech projects are innovating for circular futures.
- Engage with: Policymakers, industry leaders, researchers. Let’s explore collaboration, scale solutions, and mobilize for sustainability.
Through the Greentech Synergy, we’re building the solutions that will someday make zero waste for a thriving green Europe.
