This week (1-7 September) marks Zero Waste Week, a globally embraced, UK‑founded campaign dedicated to reducing landfill waste and sparking sustainable living. Since its launch in 2008 by Rachelle Strauss, the campaign has offered creative, community-led challenges like fitting your week’s trash into a jam jar”, reminding us that our daily habits ripple outward across the planet.

 

In this spirit of collective action, the F6S Greentech Synergy stands as a powerful response. A collaborative initiative under F6S and encompassing 24 EU-funded projects 20 EU‑funded projects, it’s aligned with the goals of the EU Green Deal, driving climate resilience, circularity, and sustainable innovation across Europe. This synergy amplifies impact and accelerates green transformation.

 

Greentech Projects

Here’s a snapshot of the Greentech coalition and how its projects are driving circular economy, sustainability, and climate-smart solutions across industries, regions, and communities:

 

Circular Textiles & Furniture

  • STREP – Revolutionises textile circularity through automation, AI-driven sorting, and enzymatic recycling, enabling full fibre recovery for sustainable fashion and industry.
  • CIRPASS-2 – Develops Digital Product Passports (DPPs) for textiles, electronics, tyres, and construction, enabling traceability and closed-loop resource use
  • Cir4Fun – Accelerates the circular economy in the furniture sector by promoting DPPs for transparency and traceability.
  • FITT-NESS – Supports SMEs in the furniture sector by helping them design interregional investment portfolios and innovation strategies.

 

Rural Development & Communities

  • RURACTIVE – Fosters a just, inclusive, and sustainable transition in rural areas via community-led innovation ecosystems.
  • SESA – Provides replicable energy access technologies and business models in Africa, creating local economic opportunities.
  • SUSRUR – Helps tourism SMEs in rural and remote areas of Europe develop sustainable business solutions via open calls.

  • NICKEFFECT – Develops nickel-based coating materials to replace scarce platinum in energy and digital storage applications.

 

 

Why does it matter more than ever?

According to the concept of a circular economy, shifting from the traditional “take‑make‑dispose” model to one that designs out waste, keeps materials in use, and regenerates ecosystems can reduce up to 39% of global emissions, especially in sectors like plastics, food, steel, and construction.

Zero Waste Week reminds us of the urgency and promise of redesigning systems, and the Greentech Synergy exemplifies how collective innovation can deliver on that potential in Europe.
